We consulted for Cheil Worldwide on the puppet show of the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics opening ceremony, bringing the giant-puppet engineering we learned on the floats of the Viareggio Carnival.
Starting situation
The opening ceremony of the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics included a puppet show. Large stage puppets have to move safely and reliably, in the cold, in front of a stadium and a worldwide television audience.
The system
Our contribution was consulting to prepare the puppet show: how the puppets are built and how they move. It drew on more than a decade of designing the structures and animatronic movements of first-category floats for the Viareggio Carnival in Italy.
Implementation
In 2017 we were also one of the final shortlisted companies in the competitive bid to build the puppets for the ceremony's main event.
