Outcome summary
We designed the software of Gilardoni's RDG-3000 F-PA: A, B, C and S scan images, a rotating screen and automatic report generation, in an instrument that does both conventional ultrasound and phased array.
Starting situation
Gilardoni is an Italian maker of X-ray and ultrasonic equipment for non-destructive testing. The RDG-3000 F-PA is a portable flaw detector that combines conventional ultrasound and phased array in a single unit, so inspectors can find internal discontinuities in materials and structures faster and get a visual result. An instrument like this is only as good as its software: acquiring the signal, showing it clearly and producing a record the inspector can trust.
The system
- On-board software of the instrument, with the phased-array probe forming a scanning field for flaw visualisation.
- Four imaging modes: A-, B-, C- and S-scan.
- A rotating screen, so the instrument works for left-handed operators too.
- Automatic report generation.
Implementation
We developed the on-board software of the instrument between 2010 and 2012. According to the product description, the unit has a high-brightness 1024 × 768 display, weighs about 4 kg and runs 8 hours on a lithium-ion battery that can be replaced while the instrument is running. The NDA that covered this work ran for ten years and expired in 2021, so we can now name the instrument.
